In 2010, I was going for a walk in San Francisco with a dear friend, Stefanie Humphries. We commented how we wished we had time for a yoga class, but did not. This sparked an idea: How could our walk give us the same presence we felt on our yoga mats? We decided we would walk and look for things that were red. Oops! Red was everywhere we looked. Ok, then we would look for the color red paired with a shadow. While a little more effort was needed, there were stop signs at every corner. We needed something else...a circle! We continued walking and looked for scenes that contained red, a shadow, and a circle. It gave us something to look for, a way to bring our sense of sight into clear focus... and I loved it. I would walk through the city looking for unique scenes and capture photographs of them.

Over the years, I have found when I am anxious, caught up in worry, or spiraling in my thoughts, I can bring myself quickly to the present moment by simply looking for red.circle.shadow. A simple practice to ground me right here, now. Thousands of photographs later, I still get excited when I find a unique one. Give it a try and find a red.circle.shadow right where you are.
